What is caregiver burnout?

Caregiver burnout is a term used to describe the fatigue, emotional exhaustion, and loss of motivation related to providing care to someone else.

And, it can happen to anyone, but especially people such as:

  • Children caring for aging parents

  • Physicians and nurses

  • Medical technicians

  • Therapists and counselors

  • Assisted living facilitators

  • Caregivers to people with disabilities or special needs

Caregivers put so much time and effort into providing for others while also managing personal finances, family life, physical health, and more.  It is difficult enough to take care of oneself - let alone take care of others - and so many caregivers struggle with finding balance between self-and-other care.

Caregivers can get caught in a seemingly endless cycle.

If you think you might have caregiver burnout, let us help.  Psychotherapy can help people overcome caregiver burnout and regain a sense of motivation and purpose.  Here at Behavioral Medicine Partners, we know it can be difficult to ask for support – but we try to make it easy.

How can therapy help?

Therapy is all about you.

You get to have a safe, confidential space to destress, speak your mind, and breathe.  This provides a chance to set aside the weight of responsibility, even if just for a while, so that you can regain clarity and strength.

You get a chance to focus on yourself, be curious, and reflect on your life story.  As you make new discoveries about your personality and perspective, you can begin to make meaningful changes to your life.

You will learn new, healthy ways of handling stress - beyond just self-care.  Discover practical tips for managing difficult emotions, expressing your needs, and setting effective boundaries.

You can receive care, support, and kindness from someone professionally trained to offer what you need.  As a caregiver or provider, you deserve someone to provide and care for you, too, and therapy can offer that.

The Cycle of Caregiver Burnout

As this cycle continues, many caregivers begin to experience signs of burnout, such as:

  • Feeling “stuck” or “trapped”

  • Difficulty relaxing

  • Helplessness or hopelessness

  • Increased blood pressure

  • Weight gain

  • Loss of energy

  • Frequent worry

  • Sleep issues

  • Physical aches and pains
